Banking and Savings From an early age, it is important to instill the principles of responsible banking and savings habits in our children. Even through the many changes that banking has experienced in the past couple decades, there is still much to be said for how vital it is for children to learn how to handle money as they grow up. From birth, it may be wise to start a passbook savings account for your child, and if you have no children then you can do this for a niece or nephew as well. Throughout their life, help the child to see this account grow, and teach them to add to it as they acquire more funds, either by gifts or through a job as they get older. When it comes time for this young adult to purchase a car or some other large ticket item, showing them how to save will have paid large dividends. It is pretty clear, given the scale of debt that the majority of consumers have today, that banking and savings are not being taught to our kids in school. Taking this responsibility up as a parent or a guardian of a child can really help in the long run.
